Astronomy

Astronomy has been one of my interests since I was about twelve yeas old and got my first telescope and joined the Hamilton Centre of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada. When Sputnik was launched, I became interested in Space Science and Engineering, then I became interested in girls and forgot all about science for years. When my brother, Doug, in the Airforce, began tracking satellites from Cold lake Alta, for the NORAD Space Surveillance Centre, it rekindled my interest in the heavens. I requested a transfer and began doing the same job in St. Margaret's New Brunswick. There I had access to an 8” Celestron Schmidt Cassegraine telescope with a tracking mount, and could never figure out how to use it. Later, in Winnipeg, I met a man who was a member of the Winnipeg Centre R.A.S.C. and joined. It is great! I learnt a lot and made some really nice friends. The centre meets once a month, holds a members' observing night once month at its observatory. There is a 30 cm wide telescope in a dome south of the city, in addition to a number loaner telescopes available to members. I do a few talks, encourage members with the “Explore the Universe” certificate programme, do the training for the observatory, and am past president. You can reach both the Winnipeg Centre and the National R.A.S.C. via pink buttons below.

Also once per month, the Manitoba Mars Society has a meeting discussing everything Martian, and planning and doing experiments that could help to expedite our understanding of human exploration of the Red Planet.
